Even after the Truth has been realised,
Even after the Truth has been realised, there remains that strong, obstinate impression that one is still an ego - the agent and experiencer. This has to be carefully removed by living in a state of constant identification with the supreme non-dual Self. Full Awakening is the eventual ceasing of all the mental impressions of being an ego."
-- Adi Shankaracharya
This is an impactful quote from Adi Shankaracharya. This made me ponder deeply about what is transmutation. The definition of Transmutation is: the action of changing or the state of being changed into another form.
Alchemy became known as the spagyric art, the word ‘spagyric’ having Greek roots meaning "to separate and to join together". Evolution itself is spagyric, involving the densification and separation of spirit in matter followed by its reunification as something greater – something "more than" it was initially. This extra something we call ‘consciousness’, and it comes into being through the ever changing relationships that spirit forms with the matter it is passing through.
Infusion of soul is the key to Transmutation. If we can soften the body and mind from its rigid judgments of reality, then we'll open up an alchemical vessel through which to infuse soul. Soul is your interconnection with the Universe, and when you'll truly in it, then the infinite possibility of the Universe becomes available to you.
Most people who have profound spiritual experiences notice that, after a while, the ‘glow’ and the love they felt at some stage end up receding. Sometimes they disappear altogether. As ancient Taoists masters said: “Before enlightenment, chop wood carry water. After enlightenment, chop wood carry water.”
So, if everything goes back to normal after a peak experience, why are numinous encounters important?
In that case, the safest way to shift from crisis to resolution is to do it slowly and steadily, just like traffic engineers upgrade a major highway whilst keeping it open. They do it one segment and one lane at a time. We can apply the same principles to upgrading our personality. We do it one thought, one feeling, one word and one action at a time.
Just trust that you’re safe and you will be guided. You know you’re in the flow when you feel good and have plenty of energy to do what you set out to achieve. If you’re struggling in any way, be honest with yourself. What are you fearful of? What are you resisting?
Evolution isn’t about reaching a destination, it’s about enjoying the journey.
